"Learning a new language, or anything for that matter, takes hard work by both the tutor and the learner. I am a much better tutor now because I have been "coached" by my students to met me know what they need, what they want to learn, and how they want to learn/ together we can achieve great things!"

Current Success Story
In September 2004, when Eduardo Navarro-Torres entered the Literacy Council's doors, he stated that his goal was to be fluent in English so he could get a better job. Eduardo, a high school graduate and U.S. citizen from Mexico, recognized the need for having good English skills for employment success in the United States.

For 2 1/2 years, he and his tutor Karin Emond have met regularly to improve his overall English skills. They focused on improving his vocabulary and English skills by reading the newspaper and novels, and then discussing new word meanings. This hard work lead to his promotion at work. In his new job Eduardo will submit written evaluations and recommendations on up to 20 new hires at a time, will attend weekly meetings with management, as well as interact with both English- and Spanish-speaking employees and coordinators.

But for Eduardo, the need for English fluency became even more important when his 7-year-old daughter needed open heart surgery to correct a congenital heart defect. Eduardo was able to discuss the surgery and its risks with the specialists, complete countless forms, and make trips back and forth to Milwaukee without difficulty. Today, his daughter is fully recovered, and he enjoys helping her with her homework!

Eduardo's ability to read, write and speak English has allowed him to involve himself more fully in our community. He has participated on a panel discussion at NWTC and is now tutoring someone himself. He has been a volunteer reader for our Dr. Seuss Celebration, where he and his tutor took turns reading Dr. Seuss stories bilingually to limited-English speaking children.

Eduardo's story is a perfect example of our mission -- to teach reading writing, listening and speaking to adults and families with limited basic skills and limited proficiency in English in order to help them improve the quality of their lives.
