Children First Family Literacy Program
a proven intergenerational approach that
improves the literacy, language and life skills
of both parents and children
Children First Family Literacy directly
addresses five compelling national statistics:
- Parental
literacy is one of the single most important
indicators of a child’s success (children
whose parents are functionally illiterate
are twice as likely to be functionally
illiterate themselves).
-
By age four,
children living in poor families will have
heard 32 million fewer words than children
living in professional families.
-
Long term
research verifies that family literacy
programs produce significant results:
Adults obtain and keep employment, a higher
percentage of adults achieve GED/HSED
equivalency, and the amount of literacy
activity in the home increases by 80%
-
High quality
pre-kindergarten programs can significantly
raise achievement levels, especially for
children of low socioeconomic
status—youngsters from families whose
parents are poor and undereducated.
-
Spending only
$1 in the first years of a child’s life will
make it possible to avoid spending $17 later
in life by reducing special education
placements, increasing graduation and
employment rates, providing a more skilled
workforce, and decreasing arrests and
convictions…all of which result in an
increased tax base.
